Business of the Week – Corrugated Replacements

First Machine constructed by Corrugated

First Machine constructed by Corrugated

Corrugated Replacements started in 1981 with a manual mill and two honest brothers. Back then, they machined parts in their grandfather’s barn and sold them to local box plants. With a niche for good business and reliable service, Corrugated Replacements saw swift growth. Within mere months of start-up, it was time to hire an employee. Four years later, operations doubled with an addition of 2000 square feet to the existing barn.

Today, Corrugated Replacements has become a major component of the corrugated and paperboard converting industries with 2400 clients worldwide who depend on them for parts and services. Visit their website at www.corrugatedreplacements.com for more information.

Business of the Week – Foodland Grocery

foodland500Foodland has been serving Union County for over 42 years and is a well known landmark in Downtown Blairsville, Georgia. Owner Wayne Abercrombie says, “Bill Hunter and BJ Davis built the place in 1965. It was called the Superette. Tony Dyer and I bought it in 1968 and renamed it the A&D Supermarket. In 1974, I bought out Tony and named it Foodland.”

Wayne’s son Ricky started working at the store 29 years ago. Father and son have seen many changes. Wayne says, “The town of Blairsville has grown a lot over the years. We used to know everyone’s name but there are a lot of new faces now. There are also a lot more rules and regulations to keep up with.”

Foodland is a complete grocery store with fresh produce, a dairy department, meat department, canned goods, frozen section, household supplies, hardware, and more. One customer says, “Foodland has the best steaks in town. I never have to worry about using tenderizer.”

The meat department at Foodland is a busy place. Marty says, “We cut over 1500 pounds of meat every week including fresh deli meats, popular cuts of steak, roasts, ground beef, ground chuck, and ground round. We also have old-fashioned salt cured country hams, chicken, and pork.” If customers need cooking instructions, Marty is always glad to give out directions and recipes.

Foodland offers competitive pricing. They have a good selection of Christmas candy, local honey, local syrup, and other seasonal and specialty items. Many people depend on Foodland for special occasions. Foodland has delicious homemade coleslaw, baked hams, rotisserie turkeys, hoop cheese, and party platters. Call now to place an order!

Nominated for this honor by Jade Baker who says “I think FoodLand Grocery should be business of the week for next week. They’re the only hometown grocer left here, and the owner, Wayne Abercrombie, would go above and beyond to help anyone in need, even if it meant he had to go without. They have a wonderful and friendly staff who would give you the shirt off their back. I think they need a little recognition.” On Friday, February 1, 2013 the staff and some lucky customers were treated to a lunch of BBQ Chicken & Ribs, Au Gratin Potatoes, Fresh Salad, and Turtle Cheesecake for Dessert.

The store is located at 34 Haralson Drive. Business hours are Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m.

Stonepile Gap

Pass not by, Stranger! Stop! Silently bare your head, drop a stone upon her grave, and make a wish straight from your heart. The Spirit of Eternal Youth and Happiness hovers near to grant the wishes of all who love the hills and valleys of her native home

Song of Trahlyta

stonepilegapIf you’ve ever ridden through the area near Suches and Dahlonega, GA you probably recall seeing a pile of stones alongside the road where Highway 60 and Highway 19 split. This marks the grave of a Cherokee princess, Trahlyta. The rocks are said to be over the grave of a Cherokee Indian Princess who loved the forest and called the mountains of North Georgia home.

Trahlyta, according to legend, lived on a mountain near her grave. A Mountain Medicine Man told her to walk along a path, drink from a spring and wish to never grow old. “You will become more beautiful with each sip” the voice told her. She followed the path and drank from the spring. Word of her beauty quickly spread throughout the mountain.

Trahlyta rejected as her suitor a Cherokee warrior named Wahsega. So, Wahsega kidnapped Trahlyta and took her to his home. She begged and pleaded for her release, but Wahsega would not permit it. With each day her strength waned, her happiness gone, longing for her mountain forest. As she lay dying Trahlyta asked to be buried in the mountain paradise from which she had come. On her death bed she said: “Strangers, as they pass by, may drop a stone on my grave and they too shall be young and happy, as I once was,” she said, “What they wish for shall be theirs!.”

Over the years, as they passed the grave, Cherokee, and later whites, would pick up a nearby stone and add it to her grave for good luck.  Twice men have attempted to move the grave during road construction. Both times at least one person died in an accident while moving the pile. The stone grave remains today in the same place it has always been. The spring she’d once walked upon and drank from for her youth and beauty is now Porter Springs. In the latter half of the 19th Century became a stopping point for those seeking the water that Trahlyta had sipped to become eternally young.”

New/Old name – same great Resort!

Copperhead LodgeIn October 2009, Anthony Cassulo and Michelle Evans purchased what was known as Copperhead Lodge, Blairsville, Georgia. At that time the name “Copperhead Lodge” and its corresponding website were not available. A new name, “The Lodge at Copperhead”, was chosen, but has been a tongue twister for many since. Copperhead Lodge just seems to roll off the tongue so much easier. In light of this, the website address www.copperheadlodge.com has been secured and the company will undergo a re-branding back to Copperhead Lodge this winter.

This transition will be seamless to Lodge customers. The old website will automatically redirect to the new one, and everyone on the email list will continue to receive emails from the Lodge after the transition. Even the Lodge’s Facebook page name will transfer to the renewed name, but page interaction will not be interrupted.

Very soon the new logo, new collateral, and slight website design changes will be seen, as well as a new and expanded offering of branded merchandise available in the gift shop. Do not discard Lodge at Copperhead T-shirts, because there will be many opportunities to earn discounts when wearing the old shirts, as a thank-you to the Lodge’s long time customers.

The owners appreciate the support of their customers and friends over the last three years, and look forward to many more years of making memories at Copperhead Lodge.

Anthony & Michelle

Secret Roads

Friday, May 18th, Wayne Busch from America Rides Maps presented to a group of riders gathered at The Lodge at Copperhead, a couple hundred of his favorite Blue Ridge Motorcycle Rides to help find new places to ride and enjoy. Riders were updated on current road conditions, suggestions for your routes, and help finding the best secret roads in the mountains.

Then, on Saturday, May 19th the eager group of riders saddled up and enjoyed the wonder that is the North Georgia Mountains. A cool morning turned into a warm afternoon as a group of motorcycle enthusiasts joined Wayne Busch from America Rides Maps on a twisty, Spring journey that had no rules, no hassles, and no planning. It was meant to be an enjoyable experience where the goal was just to have fun riding together, and that’s exactly what happened. Suggestions were taken before the ride so participants could share places they wanted to go or types of scenery they wanted to see, and then it was time to just head out and let the journey bring what it would. What an adventure it was. About the only thing more beautiful than the Georgia Mountains in the Spring, is the Georgia mountains in the Fall. I think I see another ride on the horizon.

Wayne Busch, creator or America Rides Maps and the Smoky Mountain Rider Blog, makes your motorcycle vacation trips so easy because he rides the mountains searching out the most scenic and challenging motorcycle rides, he compares them and highlights the best ones on his maps, then he seeks out the best ways to connect them. You relax and enjoy knowing so many great ways to find your dream rides.
